The Lavalette House

The Lavalette House is located in the small Town of Gretna, Virginia. Conveniently located 30 miles south of Lynchburg and 25 miles north of Danville, at the intersection of US Route 29 and VA Route 40.(map)

Gretna was founded in 1876 as a major railroad junction for the Virginia Midland Railroad. A north-south line ran from Gretna to Lynchburg and then a western line was built to Rocky Mount and Franklin. This gave life to a new town which was called Franklin Junction.

After paved roads became available the Franklin Line was abandoned and the town took on the name of Gretna. The old railroad bed can still be found west of town.
